Following are the most recent books available for purchase from the Woodford County Historical Society
The Woodford County Historical Society has four new books for sale that might be of interest to researchers, historians, and readers who enjoy history, genealogy, or biography.
1) MacKenzie Miller, The Gentleman Trainer from Morgan Street (2006) by Jonelle Fisher. Miller, who was born and raised in Versailles, spent half a century training Thoroughbred horses at some of the country's most prestigious racetracks. During his career, horses Miller trained won almost every noteworthy race in the United States at least once, including the Kentucky Derby. "A devoted family man, he was admired and respected by the racing establishment and the press for his integrity, honesty, hard work, and charm as well as for the superb talent he brought to the track." (Quote is from the book's jacket.) The hard cover, 165-page book contains more than 40 photographs. MacKenzie Miller, The Gentleman Trainer from Morgan Street (2006) by Jonelle Fisher sells for $22 plus tax.
2) 1860 Census, Fayette County, Kentucky, abstracted by Gwendolyn G. Tippie. The book contains the following information: dwelling in order of visitation, the name of every person whose usual place of residence was with the family, age, gender, race, occupation, value of real estate owned, and birthplace. Additional notes, such as whether the person was blind, epileptic, or insane, are also included where applicable. 1860 Census, Fayette County, Kentucky, abstracted by Gwendolyn G. Tippie, is a soft cover, 286-page book, and sells for $28 plus tax.
3) The Lexington Cemetery, by Gwen Tippie. This book contains information recorded from tombstones in the Lexington, Ky., Cemetery. The book was made possible through the work done by Gwen and William Tippie, of Lexington, who recorded tombstones in the older sections of the Lexington Cemetery. Approximately 10,000 graves, with death dates generally 1911 or earlier, are recorded in the book. Headstones with death dates after 1911 were not recorded because that is the date the state began systematically recording death certificates, and death dates after 1911 can be found in state records. The book includes the surname, first name, birth and death dates, section number, and additional remarks--if any--on the stones. A map of the cemetery sections is also included in the book. The Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Kentucky is a 184-page, soft cover, comb bound book with vinyl overlay, and sells for $18.95 plus tax (and shipping, if applicable).
4) James Madison and the Struggle for the Bill of Rights (2006) by Richard Labunski. From the book jacket description: "In these pages Richard Labunski offers a dramatic account of how an unlikely hero--the shy, soft-spoken, and scholarly James Madison--almost single-handedly brought the Bill of Rights to life against daunting odds, forever shaping, and perhaps even saving, the United States. Rich with details of political life in early America, this compelling and colorful narrative returns an under-appreciated patriot to his rightful place among the Founding Fathers and sheds new light on a key turning point in our nation's history." This is a hard cover, 336 page book, published by Oxford University Press (2006) as part of their "Pivotal Moments in American History" series. The book sells for $28.00 plus tax (and shipping, if applicable).
